Gonubie was named by the Xhosas which means Bramble Berry from which Gonubie was derived. The Bramble tree produces jucy sweet berries and was much sought after by the Xosa inhabitants. The earliest records of Gonubie were made by Ensign Beutler in 1752. Major General, Sir Edward Brabant who was well known throughout the British Empire bought the farm “Gonubie Park” for £4000 in 1869. The home he built still stands today. Local farmers built holiday shacks over the years at the mouth of the river & Gonubie`s potential was realised. Mr Louis Rosenbaum bought Gonubie Park & began selling plots in 1933. This settlement grew rapidly and today there is over 18 000 inhabitants.
