Calvinia is located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It lies in one of the largest wool-producing districts in South Africa and is situated at the foot of the Hantam Mountains. |

History |

Calvinia was discovered and named after John Calvin in 1851. It was the centre for religious activity. The Hantam Mountains was named after the Khoi people, which was after the plants, known as Heyntame. |

Attractions |

Calvinia hosts the Hantam Meat Festival every year during the last week of August. The lifestyle, farming and transport systems of early inhabitants can be seen in the Museum of Calvinia. There are plenty of Nature Reserves to visit, such as the Akkerdam Nature Reserve, Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve and the Tankwa-Karoo National Park. |

Calvinia receives approximately 146mm of rain per year and because it receives most of its rainfall during winter it has a Mediterranean climate. It receives the lowest rainfall of 1mm in January and the highest rainfall of of 23mm in June. The average midday temperatures for Calvinia range from 15.3°C in July to 30.6°C in January. The region is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 1.4°C on average during the night. |
