Until 1913 Lambert’s Bay was known as Otterdam. The area was proclaimed and the very first plots were sold. Between 1826 and 1840 the town was named after former British admiral, Sir Robert Lambert. In 1901 during the Anglo-Boer war, British ships often visited the area.
The first lobster canning factory was erected in 1918 and since then the village start developing.

Lamberts Bay normally receives about 152mm of rain per year and because it receives most of its rainfall during winter it has a Mediterranean climate. It receives the lowest rainfall (1mm) in January and the highest (30mm) in June. The average midday temperatures for Lamberts Bay range from 18°C in July to 28.8°C in February. The region is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 7°C on average during the night. |
