Vredenburg is located 12km inland from the coast at Saldanha Bay on the Cape Columbine Peninsula 138km north of Cape Town.

The town was established in 1875 initially as a Dutch Reformed Church to serve the surrounding communities, as the closest church was in Hopefield. The town's original name was "Twisfontein", which in Afrikaans would be translated to troubled fountain or similar. This name came about when two competing farmers fought over the only available freshwater spring in the area. The town's population in 2002 was 31,283.

Vredenburg normally receives about 239mm of rain per year and because it receives most of its rainfall during winter it has a Mediterranean climate. It receives the lowest rainfall (1mm) in February and the highest (45mm) in June. The monthly distribution of average daily maximum temperatures for Vredenburg range from 16.5°C in July to 25.6°C in February. The region is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 8°C on average during the night.
