Midrand is what will eventually join Gauteng's two sisters Johannesburg and Pretoria. Its residential areas came to life as a direct response to the massive office parks that began to pop up in the 1980s. Here, on the Highveld between the two cities was space. With the completion of the N1 Highway developers were quick to recognize this was an accessible spot for Gauteng's white collar workers to reach. Before the road from Johannesburg to Pretoria was the old track once used by ox-wagons and stage-coaches. The new highway was high speed and ran right through the area that is now Midrand.
