Rustenburg is a mining town set in a luxuriant garden of lush vegetation and backed by the forest-covered slopes of the Magaliesberg. The town was established in 1851 when a church was built and the surrounding area named Rustenburg (Town of Rest) by the minister. It was here that the fledgling South African Republic's most famous president Paul Kruger was born. Besides mining, the area is famous for its Outspan Oranges and is a major tobacco producer. There is also a spectacular nature reserve south west of the town that is home to a host of different antelope species and a paradise for birds like the black Eagle and Cape vulture.
