Welcome to ERA in Garden Route
This bustling regional centre is at the heart of the Garden Route. Although an inland town, George's setting between the Outeniqua mountains and the sea inspired the author Anthony Trollop to describe it as the prettiest village on the face of the earth. The dense forests that once surrounded the town are mostly gone but George remains a floral kingdom with scarlet lilies, proteas, ericas and watsonias covering the mountain slopes. A fun way to see the surrounding countryside is to ride the Outeniqua Choo-choo to Knysna. The puffing of this old steam engine along the George coast quickly transports its passengers to a bygone era.
"Sleepy hollow" probably best describes this wonderfully relaxed seaside town situated about half way between George and Knysna. Visitors come to Sedgefield to do nothing and the town happily obliges although its deep vleis and out-of-the-way beach offer a host of recreational activities. On the weekends city slickers take to the waters canoeing, waterskiing, swimming and diving. This is paradise for families with small children and the various resorts offer a collection of facilities and restaurants geared at kids. For those who need more action this is a good base to explore the Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve.
