Welcome to ERA in Limpopo
This is the realm of the Rain Queen, Modjadji, of the Lovedu tribe, whose mysterious life inspired Rider Haggard to write his novel “She”.
Limpopo encapsulates the essence of the country’s African traditions and culture. It was nearly two thousand years ago that the first black Africans crossed the Limpopo River, driven south by trading needs, war and the endless search for grazing for their livestock. Today the Limpopo Provine (formerly the Northern Province), like its neighbour Mpumalanga, has its share of game farms but its real treasure is its people.
It was at Mapungubwe (the Hill of the Jackals) in the 1930s that a farmer first discovered remains of an ancient civilization whose people had built stone walls, used iron tools and made jewellery. Among the treasures he picked up was a tiny gold rhinoceros and bowl. Mapungubwe was recently declared a World Heritage site. Other archeological excavations have taken place at Thulamela and Masorini, both inside the Kruger National Park, Makapan’s Cave near Potgietersrus and Bakone Malape near Polokwane(Pietersburg).
The area is also rich in Voortrekker history and stories abound of the fighting between early Afrikaners and the Ndebele. One of the dominating features of the province is the N1 highway or Great North Road that links Gauteng with Beitbridge, South Africa?s only border post with its northern neighbour, Zimbabwe. At Easter the N1 is jammed with cars, minibus taxis and buses as hundreds of thousands of people make their way to Zion City Moria for the annual celebration of the Zion Christian Church. The rhythmic beating of drums best sums up the atmosphere and pace of life in the Limpopo Province
