Welcome to ERA in North West
The North West Province, home to Sun City and a host of other casinos, is the gambling capital of South Africa.
Before 1994 a large chunk of the province was Bophuthatswana, a homeland ruled by the controversial Lucas Mangope. It was here in Bop that the billionaire Sol Kerzner found his way around the old South Africa’s draconian anti gambling laws and created casinos complete with topless extravaganzas and a Superbowl. During the political transition the province was back in the news this time, due to the antics of the rightwing group, the AWB led by Eugene Terblanche, whose power base was in the town of Ventersdorp.
Today the beautiful and ancient landscape of the North West Province is finally coming into its own. It is flanked in the east by the Magaliesberg Mountains, a hundred times older than the Himalayas, while, on its southern border, is the mighty Vaal River, one of the main sources of water for Gauteng. In the west the grassy landscape eventually peters out into the desert sands of the Kalahari. Near Sun City and a reasonably quick drive from Gauteng is the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve one of the best places in South Africa to see the big five when time is short.
For history lovers the region is scattered with Anglo Boer War battlefields most notably the capital town of Mafikeng where British and Tswana forces held out for nearly a year against Boer troops. Then there is the Groot Marico where the much loved South African writer Herman Charles Bosman based his short stories and made “mampoer” (peach brandy) famous. Some of the world’s largest platinum mines are situated in this part of the country.
